In juni dacht ik er nog zo (link) over. Inmiddels is 2011 bijna voorbij en heeft zowat iedereen zijn plasje wel over het jaar gedaan. Behalve ik dan. HIERRR mijn top tien beste reissues en compilaties. Hierrr mijn Franse round-up. En hieronder mijn reguliere jaarlijst. UPDATE: WAARIN IK DUS GEWOON KEIHARD ROOSBEEF EN EEFJE DE VISSER VERGEET! SCHANDE GUUZ!

1. Coeur de Pirate - Blonde. Béatrice Martin is jong, blond en zit vol tattoo's. Ze heeft een stem die werkt als kniespierverslapper (ook live) en het talent om liedjes te schrijven die beklijven. Met invloeden uit Calexico-land, uit het sexy Franse ye-ye-verleden en haar bloedende hart. Geen plaat zo vaak gedraaid als deze. En me geen moment verveeld.

2. Feist - Metals. Had Béatrice van hierboven mijn hart niet gestolen, was haar landgenote Leslie Feist bovenaan geëindigd. Les gaat niet zo ver terug als Bé wat betreft retro-invloeden, maar iemand heeft ook op haar ziel gestaan. En ook zij wilde bij de verwerking daarvan hulp van koperblazer-extraordinaire Colin Stetson. Zowel Bé als Leslie houden het met hulp van hun schijnbaar beperkte stem luchtig. Maar ondertussen.

3. Jungle By Night - Jungle By Night. Eerder schreef ik al: ik wil een Jungle-by-Nighter-zijn, en dat wil ik nog steeds. Ik heb een flink pak afrobeat en aanverwante muziek gehoord, de afgelopen jaren. Geweldige muziek, echt. Zelden klonk daarbij de eigen kijk zo duidelijk door als bij JBN uit Amsterdam.

4. Selah Sue - Selah Sue. Mme Guuzbourg heeft ook zo haar voorkeuren, en dit was er afgelopen jaar één van. Tijdens de zomervakantie HEUL vaak gehoord. En daarvoor en daarna geregeld gehoord en gezien op radio en tv. Net als JBN heeft Sanne/Selah Sue haar eigen stempel gevonden in een bekend, door vele grote helden vastgelegd stramien. Waarmee ze, zo zagen mme. Guuzbourg en ik, ook met gemak de enorme Maas-zaal van het North Sea Jazz festival kan inpakken.

5. Nicole Atkins - Mondo Amore. Heel wat hartebreekplaten bevolken mijn top tien. Ik houd ervan om te zwelgen in andermans ellende, blijkbaar. Verder wil ik daar niet te lang over nadenken, eigenlijk. Nog altijd komen de liedjes van Atkins hard binnen. Dat wel.

6. Gorki - Research and Development. Ook als ze een wat mindere plaat maken, waarbij de stem van Luc naar mijn smaak te ver achterin de mix ligt, horen ze wel thuis in mijn jaarlijst. Omdat Gorki nu eenmaal de allerbeste Nederlandstalige rockband ooit ter wereld is.

7. Dustin O'Halloran - Lumière. Met dank aan André Kuijpers (nee, niet de astronaut!), die deze neo-klassieke ambient-pianist tipte. Ook veel collegae van O'Halloran geprobeerd (leve Spotify) maar ik bleef terugkeren naar dit album. Stemmig, sfeervol, ontspannend, nooit vervelend.

8.The Black Keys - El Camino. Dan denk je dat je klaar bent met rockmuziek. Dat je 't allemaal wel gehoord hebt met die gitaren. En dan komt dit op je pad. Lekker met de vuilnisbakken rammelen en er een orgeltje naast zetten. En ondertussen ook subtiel uit de hoek komen.

9. John Paul Keith - The Man that Time Forgot. Kwaliteit kent geen tijd. Retro-pop? Joh, zal best. Dit zijn ijzersterke, tijdloze liedjes.

10. Charles Bradley - The World is Going Up in Flames. De wereld gaat ten onder, maar gelukkig hebben we deze ontzettend fijne retro-soul plaat nog kunnen horen. Live was het ook geweldig, als je met Charles meeging in zijn overemotionele show.

A high note, a low note, from Blue Note

UPDATE: Marco Kalnenek maakte mij er op attent dat De Volkskrant, werkgever van Gijsbert Kamer, in 2006 een boxje in de webwinkel van de krant aanbood onder de titel Blue Note Perfect Takes. Met daarin, jawel, Birth of the Cool. Zie hier. Ik weet niet zeker of Kamer daartegen geprotesteerd heeft, maar ik denk het niet. Rudy van Gelder, wiens naam prominent op deze Blue Note box prijkt, had met de originele opnames van BotC niets van doen. Wel was hij betrokken bij de reissue.

Gijsbert Kamer maakt zich boos omdat NRC Handelsblad afgelopen zaterdag het album ‘Birth of the Cool’ van Miles Davis gratis weggaf in de verkeerde verpakking. Hij maakt er zelf weliswaar een grapje over (‘Een gegeven paard moet zijn bek houden, of zoiets’), maar het is Gijsbert, de contentieuze cd-koper, wel menens: ‘Mag ik dit geschiedvervalsing noemen?’ En verderop: ‘Dus wil je als krant een cd-box uitbrengen dan moet je ook je best doen te zorgen dat alles klopt, lijkt me. En geen Blue Note etiket plakken op albums die met dat label niks te maken hebben.’

Mag ik dit ‘gezeur’ noemen?

Kamer constateert in zijn opinie-artikel terecht dat er in de wereld van klassieke muziek en jazz een ‘wildwest situatie’ heerst: schimmige labels brengen supergoedkope versies uit van albums, vaak rip-offs van mooi verzorgde heruitgaves van de orginele labels. Die praktijken zijn gesanctioneerd omdat veel van die opnames ‘public domain’ zijn geworden; het auteursrecht is vervallen. Het weerhoudt bona fide labels soms van het heruitgeven of beschikbaar maken van oud werk.

Ik noemde Kamer daarnet een ‘contentieuze cd-koper’, omdat hij graag een pak geld neerlegt voor mooi verzorgde box-sets van ‘immens belangrijke trio’s’ als The Carter Family. Nota bene: uitgebracht door labels waarop het originele werk niet verscheen. Numero, Ace/Kent, Bear Family, Rhino, Light in the Attic, Soul Jazz, Finders Keepers, Soundway, Sublime Frequencies, zo kan ik nog wel even doorgaan: allemaal labels die een leuke boterham verdienen met het heruitgeven van platen. Best lucratief, anders zouden er niet zoveel van die heruitgave-bedrijfjes zijn. Hun cd’s en boxjes zijn prima verzorgd, in velerlei opzichten. Maar niet goedkoop. Tenzij je geduld hebt en gebruik maakt van verkoopsites als Discogs.com, Gemm.com of Ebay, waar je ook afgeprijsde uitgaves van die labels kunt vinden.

Ik twijfel eraan om die sites te noemen, want misschien mag dat wel helemaal niet van Gijsbert Kamer. Voor iemand die op een gemene tweet reageert met ‘Onzin, ik moet helemaal niks’, probeert Gijsbert ‘de cd-koper’ (u en mij) toch iets voor te schrijven: als je cd’s koopt, moet het wel ‘kwaliteit’ zijn. En daar betaal je bij voorkeur de volle mep voor. Die cd’s moeten dan wel op de originele labels verschenen zijn, in de originele vormgeving. O, wacht, nee. Een uitgave van reissue-labels als Bear Family, Ace of Rhino mag ook. En als die dan niet het originele artwork gebruiken? Toch goed. Want er zit veel werk in.

Ik vind het een weinig steekhoudend argument.

Voor mij zit de meerwaarde van een heruitgave ook in de uitgebreide informatie die, ik noem waar wat, de heruitgave van alle liedjes van Candi Staton op het Fame-label biedt. Nerd-informatie, dat wel. Over verschijningsdata, studio's, technici, muzikanten. Mannenfeitjes. Soms heb ik daar geen behoefte aan (of google ik die info wel bij elkaar) en is een goedkope (soms zelfs originele) uitgave ook goed. Miles Davis gratis bij NRC? Handig voor in de auto. Ik had Birth of the Cool al, in een heruitgave. The Complete Birth of the Cool zelfs. Met het Capitol-logo, maar ook dat van EMI op de cd. Prima. Ik heb ook originele Blue Note-vinylplaten in de kast staan. Ruikt heerlijk. Klinkt ook nog best aardig. Vaak een sloot geld voor betaald. Maar dat hoort bij een hobby als plaatjes verzamelen. Ik ben dan weer niet zo hardcore dat ik alles origineel wil hebben. Niet te betalen ook.

Labels verdwijnen. Labels fuseren. Catalogi worden overgenomen. EMI is eigenaar van Blue Note, en Capitol. EMI wil plaatjes verkopen, NRC wil inkomsten. Kranten proberen al heel lang lezers aan zich te binden, en andere inkomstenbronnen aan te boren dan alleen kranten verkopen. Met succes. Gijsbert Kamer heeft daar ook aan meegewerkt, trouwens.

In deze tijden, waarin veel muziek niet meer van cd komt maar van computer en gsm, is een label van minder groot belang dan dertig, veertig jaar terug. In het boekje bij wat ik maar even 'de NRC-cd' noem (waarin inderdaad weinig geinspireerde tekst staat met slordigheden) wordt niet verzwegen dat BotC op Capitol verscheen. Dat er een andere indruk ontstaat, tja. Wat mij betreft is die indruk niet ‘fouter’ dan dat Bear Family zich op de borst klopt over 'hun' The Carter Family-boxje. Er worden zelfs Blue Note-platen heruitgegeven op andere labels dan Blue Note zelf (maar door Heavenly Sweetness). Fijn, voor de liefhebber. Wie wil weten hoe het echt zit, komt daar zonder al te veel moeite achter. Kun je mee doen aan popkwisjes, de enige plek waar je echt wat hebt aan die informatie.

Eerder schreef Gijsbert Kamer een enthousiaste, maar drassig onderbouwde ode aan de platenzaak: die moet blijven, want daar werken mensen die veel horen. En die vertellen je dan over een plaat waar Pitchfork niet over schrijft. Trouwens, al bloggers zijn veel en veel te hip.

Ontroerend, dat in de bres springen voor de vrienden in platenwinkel. Die rechtvaardiging van je werk als popjournalist - een beroep dat, net als de platenzaak, behoorlijk onder druk staat. Het zal vast de stress daarover, en de daarmee gepaard gaande temporary insanity zijn geweest die Kamer ertoe dreef om zijn betoog te besluiten met:'Dan zal de cd als drager nog toekomst hebben.'
Of zou hij het echt menen?

Wat overblijft is dat Birth of the Cool een ge-wel-di-ge plaat is. Nog steeds. Op welk label dan ook. Miles Davis heeft er nog veel meer gemaakt. Worden ook genoemd in het boekje bij de NRC-cd. Is eenvoudig te vinden op allmusic.com en zelfs Wikipedia. Nog beter: vraag er 's naar bij een van uw vrienden. Of op Twitter. Turf dan gelijk even hoe vaak u de tip krijgt 'om toch zeker de originele uitgave op (vul maar in)' te kopen.

Wat was de laatste keer dat je muziek hoorde die compleet nieuw voor je was? En dat je daar een kick van kreeg, alsof je in een science-fiction film was beland en je een jetpack omgegespt kreeg, zodat je vrijelijk kon rondvliegen?

De kans is groot dat je die kick voor het laatst voelde toen je voor het eerst techno hoorde. Muziek waar nieuwe handvatten voor nodig waren, die niets te maken had met structuren van popliedjes of klassieke muziek.
Techno is bepaald geen nieuw genre, in zijn boek Retromania stelt journalist Simon Reynolds dat de afgelopen tien jaar geen enkele muzikale progressie is geboekt. Alles is al eens eerder gedaan. Wie zich, zoals Reynolds, de kick van het nieuwe, van het futuristische, nog goed kan herinneren, zal dat een mismoedig makende conclusie vinden.
Retromania is een dik 400 pagina's tellend onderzoek naar hoe het zover heeft kunnen komen. De Engelse journalist, die eerder uitstekende boeken schreef over post-punk en de rave-cultuur, duikt in de wereld van sixties-punkverzamelaars. Hij spreekt mannen (er komen vooral mannen in zijn boek voor) die concertposters van weleer van een authenticiteitsstempel kunnen voorzien. Hij interviewt kunstenaars die opmerkelijke gebeurtenissen uit de popmuziek herhaalden, zoals het laatste concert van The Smiths, of een show van The Cramps in een psychiatrisch ziekenhuis. Hij trekt vergelijkingen met mode, waarin ook naar hartelust wordt geplunderd uit het verleden.
Reynolds kraakt een paar harde noten. Zo schrijft hij terecht dat niemand geinteresseerd was in West-afrikaanse psychedelica of 'Welsh beat' totdat hipsters compilaties onder die vlag gingen uitbrengen, en het genre achteraf bedachten. Hij beschrijft een concert van de heropgerichte New York Dolls, waarbij het publiek niet zit te wachten op de opgeblazen hardrock die ze nu maken maar liever hits van vroeger wil horen. En hij gaat langs bij zogenaamde rock-historici en muziekmuseums waar revolutie en opwinding wordt teruggebracht tot lederen jekkies en flyers.

Uiteindelijk beseft hij dat terugkijken niks nieuws is. Al in 1990 werd teruggegrepen naar de jaren tachtig, en hij haalt de reeds decennia durende aantrekkingskracht van rock & roll uit de jaren vijftig aan. Retromania is in zoverre een nieuw fenomeen dat er nu pas goed geld te verdienen is aan muziek-nostalgie, daarvan geeft Reynolds vele voorbeelden.
De geschiedenis van popmuziek is inmiddels uitgebreid genoeg om op terug te kijken, om eruit te halen wat je opwindend vind. Reynolds noemt als voorbeeld Vampire Weekend. De Newyorkse band heeft meer dan alleen Afrikaanse invloeden. Horchata, openingsnummer van het tweede Vampire Weekend-album Contra, refereert aan Bollywoodmuziek, aan Buddy Holly, aan deephouse en aan jaren tachtig-galm. En toch voelt het niet als 'messy plagiarism', maar als iets natuurlijks. Er zijn meer artiesten die dit soort super-hybride muziek maken, en in het boek wordt een artiest geciteerd die zegt dat we nu te zijn aan een moment van evualatie van wat we de laatste honderd jaar allemaal hebben bedacht en opgenomen. En dat zo'n evaluatie niet noodzakelijk slecht hoeft te zijn - sterker, de artiest in kwestie, Daniel Lopatin van Oneohtrix is een van de muzikanten die uit tv-tunes, library-muziek en oude experimentele elektronische muziek weer nieuwe muziek maakt.

Als lezer krijg je een paar keer een spiegel voor gehouden. Zo koop ik zelf voornamelijk nog reissues en compilaties van oude, veelal zwarte muziek. En ik download me daarnaast ook suf. Ik heb inmiddels meer muziek dan ik in dit leven nog kan terugluisteren. En ik blijf maar stapelen, graaien. Eén van de gevolgen: ik ben al een tijdje rockmoe, zo'n nieuwe Arctic Monkeys doet me niks. Het opzetten van een tribute-concert aan een 40 jaar oude plaat als Carole King's Tapestry vind ik bevredigender. Als muziekjournalist heb ik vaak proberen uit te leggen waar nieuwe muziek vandaan komt - maar is dat wel goed? Ben ik niet onderdeel van het probleem? Reynolds citeert de Italiaanse futuristen, die aan het begin van de 20ste eeuw het liefst musea zouden laten onderlopen om verlost te zijn van de geschiedenis van kunst. Met een schone lei beginnen, niet alsmaar terug kijken. Hij haalt ook een paar keer Britse chavs aan, de onderklasse, die helemaal niet geinteresseerd is in het verleden of historische context, maar vooral voor nieuw en blinkend gaat. Misschien moeten we meer vergeten om die kick van het nieuwe te kunnen herbeleven.

Ik ben 42, vijf jaar jonger dan Reynolds. Ergens schrijft hij dat zijn kinderen helemaal niet geinteresseerd zijn in nieuwe ontwikkelingen, in de toekomst. Het hier en nu, dat telt. De aloude generatiekloof openbaart zich. Ik ben vaak genoeg jaloers geweest op jongeren die weinig tot geen besef hadden van muziekgeschiedenis maar gewoon genoten van wat ze hoorden. Mopperen dat het een suf muzikaal jaar was, dat doen alleen popjournalisten van 35 en ouder. Het mag zo zijn dat muziek de afgelopen tien jaar weinig is opgeschoten, maar wil dat ook zeggen dat er niks fatsoenlijks is gemaakt? Reynolds noemt verder uit het recente, en veel minder recente verlden zoveel voorbeelden van wat op papier tamelijk opwindende muziek moet zijn, dat zijn boek voor mij in ieder geval aanleiding is om nog 's fijn terug te kijken en te luisteren naar wat ooit gemaakt is. Het zal niet zijn eerste opzet zijn geweest, maar wat mij betreft wakkert Reynolds met zijn boek juist Retromania aan.

De toekomst komt vanzelf wel, ik heb nog genoeg om te terug te kijken de komende tijd.

Halfjaarlijst

Half juni, tijd voor een halfjaarlijst. Om te kijken wat er in december van over blijft, vooral.

1. Nicole Atkins – Mondo Amore. Er zijn veel liedjes geschreven over liefdesverdriet. Maar niet vaak kwam een heel album vol met dat soort liedjes zo ONGELOOFLIJK hard binnen. Wat ook helpt is dat Nicole zich niet aan een stijl houdt, maar lustig kuntrie, soul, rock en wat al niet meer gebruikt.

2. Dennis Coffey – Dennis Coffey. Funkrockgitarist van 70 jaar oud gordt de gitaar weer om, belt wat jonge(re) helden en herneemt nummers uit zijn eigen verleden, opgenomen met bands als Parliament/Funkadelic en 100 Proof (Aged in Soul). Resultaat is een gruizig swingende herhalingsoefening, zonder ouderdomsvlekken.

3. Tim Knol – Days. Tim en zijn mannen hebben de muzikale horizon wat verbreedt, en dat pakt heel goed uit. Vooral als de orgels loeien gaan mijn oren gloeien.
4. Destroyer – Kaputt. Ik heb een soft spot voor softrock, en als je daar dan je eigen draai aan geeft zoals hier, ben ik helemaal voor.

5. Melanie Laurent – En t’attendent. Genoeg leuke Franse liedjes dit jaar, maar Franse albums die van van a tot z kunnen boeien die moeten nog worden uitgebracht. Zuchtmeisje pur sang Melanie Laurent komt een heel eind, niet in de laatste plaats dankzij vriendje Damien Rice.

6. Selah Sue – Selah Sue. Er is een hele leuke shred van Sanne te zien op Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8hsiL5TaOY. Die benadrukt wat sommigen vreselijk vinden aan haar. Ik kan daar best inkomen. Maar ik vind haar crazy sufferin’ style ook onweerstaanbaar.

7. Ocote Soul Sounds – Taurus. Hele. Luie. Lekkere. Afro. Latin. Van een man die ‘t ook doet bij Antibalas. Guantanomo is een protestnummer uit de categorie If I can’t dance, I don’t wanna be part of your revolution.

8. Marike Jager – Here Comes The Night. Marike heeft een gevaarlijke jurkje aan getrokken, haar wimpers langer gemaakt en is dat nou geronnen bloed onder haar nagels?

9. Gorki – Research & Development. Een Gorki-plaat hoort altijd in mijn jaarlijstje, ook al verdrinkt de stem van Luc een beetje in de mix en zijn er een paar nummers die de kwaliteitstoets maar met de hakken over de sloot halen. Toch is en blijft Gorki de allerbeste Nederlandstalige rockband ooit.

10. Mr Dubois – Slow Bombastik. Dansbare, moderne jazz uit Rotterdam met hier en daar wat fusioninvloeden (maar dan leuk), breakbeats en, euh, een sneeuwstorm.

11. Jungle By Night - Jungle By Night. Godsamme, wat ben ik jaloers op deze jonge gasten zeg. Net droog achter de oren en nu al festival na concertzaal plat spelen met zwetende afrofunkbeatlatinethiojazzdinges. Ik wil een Jungly By Nighter zijn!

Het Britse muziektijdschrift Q liet haar lezers de beste 250 platen van de afgelopen 25 jaar (86-11) kiezen. De Top 30 werd vandaag bekend gemaakt. Daarin voornamelijk witte mannen met gitaren. Britse witte mannen met gitaren, eigenlijk. Nu hebben zij inderdaad albums gemaakt die je tot de beste 30 van de afgelopen 25 jaar mag rekenen (hoewel...Muse?). Maar dat in die lijst NUL zwarte artiesten staan (vooruit, er doen er een paar mee op die Gorillaz-plaat) is even schandalig als lachwekkend.
Hier een lijst van 15 albums van zwarte artiesten die zeker thuishoren in een top 30 van de afgelopen kwart eeuw. In tamelijk willekeurige volgorde. Vult u gerust aan in de comments.

1. Prince - Sign 'O' the Times (1987). Onbetwist meesterwerk, zeer divers. Met hits, met feestnummers, met eigenaardige experimenten, alles.
2. D'Angelo - Voodoo (2000) Neo-soul waar nooit meer iemand overheen gaat. Ook D' zelf niet. Hoeft ook niet.
3. Common - Like Water for Chocolate (2000). Het hiphop-broertje van Voodoo. Common weet ook dat hij hier nooit meer overheen gaat, maar lijdt daar niet onder. Zijn albums ook niet.
4. Erykah Badu - Mama's Gun (2000). En de vrouwelijke tegenhanger van de twee albums hierboven. Wie zijn hart niet voelt huilen bij Green Eyes, verdient een transplantatie.
5. Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back (1988). Ik geloof dat we nu pas echt doorhebben hoe revolutionair PE en productieteam The Bomb Squad werkelijk waren. Zo klinkt een tsunami.
6. Nas - Illmatic (1994). Meesterwerk. Punt.
7. Massive Attack - Mezzanine (1998). Ja-haa, Robert '3D' del Naja is blank. Maar deze plaat klinkt zo zwart als de binnenkant van een camera. Dubby, soulful, dreigend, geweldig.
8. Dizzy Rascal - Boy in da corner (2003). Wonderlijk eigenlijk dat de chauvinistische Britten deze sonisch bom niet in hun top 30 hebben staan.
9. Buena Vista Social Club - idem (1997). Nee, dit zijn geen negers nee. Maar wit zou'k ze toch ook niet willen noemen. En dan te bedenken dat ze eigenlijk een andere plaat wilden opnemen (Afrocubism, vorig jaar alsnog gemaakt en uitgebracht).
10. Ali Farka Touré - Talking Timbuktu (1994). Ook met Ry Cooder aan boord, net als BVSC. Maar gitarist en zanger Touré's ster straalt hier toch het hardst.
11. Typhoon - Tussen licht en lucht (2007). Nee, lijkt me ook niet dat Q-lezertjes deze in hun top 30 zouden stemmen. Maar mag ik ook even chauvinistisch zijn, ja? De Denker van de NL hiphop debuteert met een klassieker. Natuurlijk.
12. Moodymann - Silent Introduction (1997). I can't kick this feeling when it hits. Nog steeds niet.
13. Jose James - The Dreamer (2008). Het stoffige vakje Heren Vocaal in de jazz kreeg ineens een enorme coole injectie dankzij deze wereldzanger.
14. The Roots - Things fall apart (1999). Of toch Phrenology? Of How I Got Over? Of Illadelph Halflife? Of is een top 30-lijst met beste albums gewoon incompleet als Questlove en zijn mannen er niet staan?
15. Jay-Z - The Black Album (2003). U zegt natuurlijk: heuj, The Blueprint mot erin! Die wordt wmb ontsiert door Girls Girls Girls. En die mist 99 Problems. Dus ja

En dan vergeet ik de hele Daptone stal nog, Wu-Tang en aanverwanten, Snoop en Dre, Tribe, Gangstarr, FlyLo, MC Solaar....

Een gruwel, om zo van muziek te houden

(Onderstaande post is gebaseerd op dit opiniestuk in De Volkskrant over de Top2000. Mijn blogpost komt voort uit diverse tweets over Huzens stuk. Het is bedoelt als spiegel, en stijloefening) (al viel dat laatste niet mee. My god, wat schrijft die Huzen beroerd)

VPRO’s Song van het Jaar is de afgelopen 25 jaar uitgegroeid tot een tenenkrommend media-event dat de laatste dagen van het jaar nog troostelozer maakt dan ze al zijn. De met veel bombarie ten toon gespreide Betere Smaak wordt qua superioriteitsgevoel maar net overtroffen door Leni Riefenstahl’s Triumph des Willens. Houden deze mensen wel echt van muziek? Of willen ze vooral de eerste zijn?

Het jaarlijkse vreugdevuur der ijdelheden speelt zich af op 3FM, op van belastinggeld betaalde websites, op twitter en op 101.tv. Hier slaan generatiegenoten elkaar bulderend op de schouder: godsamme, wat kennen wij een hoop obscure bands! Hoeveel beter zijn wij dan het klootjesvolk dat elk jaar Bohemian Rhapsody op 1 stem in de Top 2000? Jij nog een te duur, laf getapt linksdraaiend biertje?

Maar er wordt ook gemord. Niet vreemd, want De Zelffeliciterende Muziekliefhebber is 'krities'. Dat er gekozen moet worden uit een groslijst is de grootste gruwel. Er staat te weinig hiphop in. Of juist teveel. Of niet de juiste hiphop. Of niet de juiste nummers van de juiste hiphopartiesten. Alleen een klein groepje diehards, dat tot vervelens toe alleen de Echte Hits wil horen, herkent zich nog in de lijst. Wie elk jaar weer opnieuw zoveel zendtijd en bandbreedte van de publieke omroep opsnoept, zou zich verplicht moeten voelen de zaken wat serieuzer aan te pakken. Waarbij allereerst de vraag moet worden gesteld over zo’n Song van het Jaar wel in goede handen is bij de VPRO.

Natuurlijk is het onmogelijk een lijst te maken waarmee iedereen het eens is. Ook bij een evenwichtiger samenstelling zal er een Song van het Jaar-lijst ontstaan waar De Betere Muziekliefhebbers geen hoge pet van op hebben. Er zijn nu eenmaal heel veel mensen die niet van hiphop houden. Of van armoedig geproduceerde ‘lo-fi’. Of van elektronische ‘dans’-muziek die uit niet meer dan een beat en wat geknisper bestaat. Daarnaast is de muzikale smaak anno 2010 meer versnipperd dan ooit in genres en subgenres, waardoor het appels met peren vergelijken geworden is. Maar toch kun je op z’n minst verwachten dat het geheel ook nog een beetje een redelijke afspiegeling van het popjaar is.

Een van de oorzaken van deze jaarlijkse marteling van het gehoor is de krakkemikkige wijze waarop de redactie van 3voor12 de lijst samenstelt. De vooraf opgestelde groslijst is volkomen arbitrair, waarbij de smaak van een klein clubje bepalend is. Dat vaak voor de verkeerde nummers wordt gekozen, of artiesten over het hoofd worden gezien, is onvermijdelijk. Zo kan het gebeuren dat leuke, frisse en hippe plaatjes niet voor de keuzelijst geselecteerd worden. Waar was Just the way you are van Bruno Mars? Of A Night Like This van Caro Emerald? ‘Geen muziek voor de VPRO’, wordt dan gezegd. Terwijl juist deze nieuwe artiesten containers vol platen verkochten dit jaar. Maar van de 3voor12-maffia mag je er niet op stemmen.
Maar kijk eens naar wat er wel in staat. Wat was de laatste keer dat iemand uit uw omgeving vol vuur over Adrian Lux praatte? Dat een vriend juichend thuis kwam met het album van Hadouken!? Dat uw partner uit puur enthousiasme zelf een T-shirt maakte van Maximum Balloon?
Maar het kan nog erger. What about de nummer 1 uit de lijst, Mumford & Sons? Is deze oudbakken folkgroep, die liedjes maken in een stijl waarvoor de publieke omroep Radio5 Nostalgia heeft bedacht, nu werkelijk het hipste van het hipste? Hiermee is de Song van het Jaar impliciet een eerbetoon aan de Top 2000, waar Echte Muziekliefhebbers zo graag op afgeven omdat die lijst al jaren hetzelfde is, er geen ruimte is voor vernieuwing en enkel een feestje van belegen bands en muziekstijlen is. Echte Muziekliefhebbers hebben altijd de bek vol van vervagende muzikale – en genregrenzen. Waarom staan moderne klassieke componisten als Greg Haines of Christopher McFall niet in de keuzelijst?

De Song van het Jaar is wat elitairisme en superioriteitsgevoel te vergelijken met Lowlands. Je moet wel naar Siberië verhuizen wil je vanaf juni niet doodgegooid worden met media-aandacht voor deze Hoogmis van de Betere Smaak. Bang om een nieuwe act te missen, worden groepjes die net het één-vingersysteem van Stef Meeder beheersen op hun synthesizer, of gisteren een gitaar hebben opgepakt, omhoog geschreven als waren het de nieuwe Eagles. Of Queen. Terwijl driekwart van de acts op het festival volgend jaar alweer afgeschreven zijn. Of erger nog, een bonafide hit hebben gescoord. Waarmee ze in de Top2000 terecht zijn gekomen.

Op FileUnder komt na de kerst mijn compilatie- en reissue-top 10, op Filles Sourires heb ik mijn 5 beste Filles en Garçons-lijstje gezet. En, voor de volledigheid dan maar, hier mijn Algemene Jaarlijstje. Waarbij ik tevoren nog opmerk dat ik wel heul veul schitterende muziek heb gehoord, maar erg weinig albums me in z'n geheel wisten te pakken. Of ik 'ontdekte' sommige albums te laat, waardoor ze net niet genoeg indruk konden maken (How I Got Over van The Roots, bijvoorbeeld). Enfin.

1. Bertrand Belin - Hypernuit.
Franse mompelaar in de Stuart Staples-traditie die naar eigen zeggen de teksten voor dit derde album op stream-of-conciousness-wijze heeft ingezongen. Mooie akoestische gitaarborduursels, geruststellende stem, poëtische teksten. Een plaat als een professioneel ingeschonken glas herfstbok, na een stevige boswandeling.
2. John Legend & the Roots - Wake Up!
Plaat gemaakt vanuit het hart, die recht in mijn blanke zieltje binnenkwam. Covers van sociaal bewogen soulkrakers (en een wolkje reggae) van toen, die nu nog superactueel blijken. Eigenlijk geen opwekkende gedachte, maar die stoppen we al dansend even weg. Wie hierna nog iets lelijks durft te zeggen over John Legend, is een zak hooi.
3. Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings - I Learned the Hard Way.
Mijn muziekvriendje Jaap Brienen noemt SJDK 'het beste bandje ter wereld', en dat is natuurlijk ook gewoon zo. Soul is tijdloos, zolang het maar zo goed is als op dit album.
4. Gideon van Gelder - Perpetual.
Mooie Grunningse jongen met ongelooflijk veel talent(en) maakt met generatiegenoten een monument van een jazz-plaat. Prikkelt op plekken waarvan ik niet wist dat een jazzplaat ze kon bereiken.
5. Schradinova - India Lima Oscar Victor Echo You.
Als Mme Guuzbourg genoeg heeft van de verantwoorde plaatjes van haar wederhelft, zet ze dit album op. Dit is dan ook de meest gedraaide plaat Chez Guuzbourg. Hoe de zangeres van een succesband met de juiste hulp en genoeg eigenzinnigheid een klein meesterwerkje maakt.
6. Charlie Dée - Husbands and Wives.
Nog altijd zijn mijn traanklieren niet bestand tegen Leaving Me. Hoe je drama omzet in bloedstollend mooie kunst.
7. Budos Band - III.
Doe het geluid van een scheepstoeter na. Laat iemand daar een afro-funkritme onderdoor slaan. Voel je 't, in je knieën, in je middenrif, in je onderbuik? Da's de Budos Band kracht. Met leden uit SDJK (zie 3.), dus ja.
8. Elodie Frégé - La fille d'apres-midi
Superzuchtmeisje maakt superzuchtmeisjesplaat over superzuchtmeisjesonderwerp: de bijslaap. Om bij weg te dromen.
9. Villagers - Becoming a Jackal.
Norbert Pek schreef in Revu: 'Dit moest eruit'. Oh ja joh, dacht ik. Ja dus. 24-jarige held keert zichzelf binnestebuiten, loeit als een jakhals en knijpt alle tranen uit je hart. Geen enkele rockplaat deed met me wat ...Jackal met me deed.
10. Cheikh Lô - Jamm
Stelling: een plaat waarop afrobeatuitvinder Tony Allen meedrumt, kan geen slechte plaat zijn. De Senegalese geweldenaar Cheikh Lô haalde er ook nog JB's-blazer PeeWee Ellis bij. Dan kan er weinig fout.

Jour 3 - San Diego to Los Angeles

Françoiz : It’s pretty cool to wake up on the coast! I ask Marianne if there are sharks before going to swim with Stéphane. No Brian Wilson in shorts but a couple dozen surfers riding the waves. A hearty breakfast is waiting for us when we get back, then we take off for Los Angeles. I don’t remember the road to Sunset Blvd; I must have been asleep. Tommy brings us to a very colorful Mexican restaurant, the best one for mojitos (it’s 3pm!). From there, I can see the Hollywood sign in the distance; no, I’m not dreaming!

Nightime. We are playing a garden gig at the house of Benjamin and Catharina. People are already laying down on the grass, it’s so hot still. Some speak French (no Pamela Anderson in fluorescent swimsuit). Marianne sings her latest album, with all her musicians in her computer, they don’t take up much room. Here we go! We might as well have played laying down too, the grass is soft as my grandmother’s cheeks. Oh! I’m drawing a blank... forgot my lines! I laugh and we start again! Except that we don’t know where to sleep tonight. We drive to Venice Beach, with all the lost and homeless of the city who also end up here like old whales.

Jour 4 - Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo.

Françoiz : Ah, la Californie ! The hills are burnt by the sun, with little black dots, cows grazing on the yellow grass. We arrive in San Luis Obispo - no relation to a certain bald French singer. It’s a quaint little university town. There are even people walking in the streets, I mean, people without cars! We go to the radio station, where we are welcomed by Tom DiSanto, a DJ whom Marianne knows well. We sing a song and then it’s all done. Later on, we sing in an art gallery and that’s a lot more serious business!

Marianne: That night, I drop off the gang at the hotel and I escape to sleep on the beach, half-hour drive away. I’ll have slept a lot outside during this tour. Need of space, nature and to enjoy the last few good days of the early fall season.

Jour 5 - San Luis Obispo to San Francisco

Marianne : Sun rays, I feel like I’m floating. A long solitary walk along the arid coast paths, over the cliffs. I meet up with the gang and we choose to head north on Route 1, more touristic, along the coast all the way to San Francisco. The first hour is magic, but soon, I’m anxious. The tour manager that I am on this trip is always afraid of getting to a venue late, and to needlessly accumulate driving hours and be more tired than necessary. Françoiz and Stephane, Christophe and Antoine seem content, however. Tommy, who has such an experience of tour life, is, like me, maybe because he’s American, anxious to arrive.

Françoiz : You always hear about the fog in San Francisco. Story goes that, at times, it can be 32 degrees in Berkeley and only 10 degrees across the bay in San Francisco. It’s already night when we arrive. The venue where we play tonight is splendid. You can almost smell the ocean air and imagine Martin Eden spending a few hours at the bar. A siren welcomes us, her breasts pointed over the stage, quite a sight. Tommy put on his best red pants in honor of our last concert together. Tomorrow, he will meet up with Jonathan for an European tour together.

Marianne : After my troubles during the first show in San Diego, I had to rethink the concept behind my one-woman solo show. I had already toured like that, in New Zealand, last winter, singing over my instrumental studio tracks, a sort of karaoke to my own music, with a narrative progression, costume changes and different personalities I would use to tell the story of my becoming a chanteuse, from the first sweet-sounding song with Calexico - the “Ballad of Cable Hogue” - to my first album and the revelation of the pleasure and untamed ferocity I now know I can bring out on stage. But the songs, performed in a certain order, will suck energy out of me. And I have no band, in this setup, to give life back, to end a show with more energy than has been spent. So I changed the setlist, re-ordered the songs and it worked! I am more alive at the end of the show than at its start!

Jour 6 - San Francisco to Eugene

Françoiz : We got our San Francisco cliché this morning: an impressive view over a lace of roads, highways and the constant noise of wheels. The inclined streets are not easy to handle, when you have to carry a drumkit, then a guitar amp and a guitar so long that it behaves as a level!

Tonight, we will sleep in a backyard hut in the garden of Michael Roderick, the singer of Mood Area 52, who are playing with us, in a club near the train tracks, with the train bells like in a western movie.

Jour 7 - Eugene to Portland

Françoiz : Nearing Portland, nature gets more dense, mountains higher. It looks like we’re in “The Shining”, at the beginning when the family of Jack Nicholson arrives at the hotel. That film was actually shot in Mt Hood, near Portland. It’s impressive and magnificent... just like the Crystal Ballroom. A venue where a lot of bands have played, leaving behind lots of printed mementos and lithographed posters, on walls from another century. The ‘boom boom’ coming down from the upstairs ballroom will be with us the entire time of our show - the best of the tour. People seem happy, including one of the members of Chumbawamba, from Seattle.

Jour 8 - Portland to Seattle

Marianne : We get to Seattle early. Christophe and me head to the museum of contemporary art: not very impressive. That night, we play in the best-equipped venue of the tour: the concert is not very impressive. I spend the night on the floor, in a kitchen, sleeping on a yoga mat.

Jour 9 - Seattle to Williams

Marianne : Drive day. No show. We sleep in a Motel 6 on border of the I-5 Interstate Highway, about an hour north of Sacramento.

Jour 10 - Williams to Los Angeles

Marianne : I explore, alone, at sunrise, the minuscule Main Street of Williams, California. The light is stunning over the rundown buildings. Yellow of the sun, red of the signs, off-white of the skeltered houses. Typical of small towns from the agricultural inlands of California, Williams is most definitely bilingual. The ‘chic’ restaurant in town is a haven for Tea Baggers, those extremists for whom Sarah Palin is queen. No one is hungry. We head out of town, southbound toward Los Angeles.

Françoiz : Tonight, we play in an acoustic guitars shop, with Benjamin, a Native American straight from the street, who will encourage and cheer us all throughout the show. We sleep in a strange wooden house, Walter’s, a musician who loves Canadian bluegrass, fan of Georges Moustaki. There are thick mattresses, like in the fairy tale about the princess, and old psychedelic drawings everywhere.

Jour 11 - Los Angeles to Phoenix

Marianne : I never really feel comfortable in Phoenix. Sleek suburbs, one after the other over a very efficient system of highways. The only good thing about today is the photobooth at the venue, where we spend the entire take of the night. Françoiz and myself share a young girl’s bedroom in a mansion belonging to French expats. I see myself, twenty-five years ago, French teenager landing in Phoenix with her parents. This woman who is putting us up overnight, like my mother at the time, finds herself living in a sudden material comfort that can only obstruct temporarily and with difficulty the soullessness of this imitation Eldorado. Bonne chance!

Jour 12 - Phoenix to Prescott

Marianne : Impossible to leave Phoenix before the afternoon since everyone wants to put in some shopping time before heading out to Europe. I’ve had enough. I’m two hours from my hometown and I can’t wait to get back. But we still have one last date in the small town of Prescott, the hometown of the republican senator, John McCain.

Françoiz : Detour through Sedona and Jerome, ex-mining town and real ‘ghost’ town, on the hill. The sights are that of the most amazing western movies, before we arrive at night in Prescott. It’s getting cold all of a sudden but the place is warm and welcoming and people really listen. For me and Stéphane, it’s very enjoyable. We sing “Si Tu Disais” with Marianne, on this last night... That old forgotten song is beautiful. It smells like old cowboy! Sad, it’s the end!

'Waddup met die Hello Kitty's van de popmuziek? De Teletubbies van de chansons? De nep-Bjorks? Waarom zingen ze allemaal alsof ze net zindelijk zijn?' Humor heb je wel, Carice van Houten. Je gebruikte bovenstaande typeringen voor wat je 'astma-singers' noemt, Franse zuchtmeisjes dus, in je column voor weekblad Revu. Ik zou als antwoord kunnen volstaan met het linken naar deze clip. Want zingen met 'hijgerige, schorre babystemmetjes' is 'shit', maar drie minuten met een hijgerige, schorre stofzuiger zingen, moet (onder het mom van het goede doel) wel kunnen?
Te makkelijk. Ik zou je er op kunnen wijzen dat je grote held Rufus Wainwright met een volbloed zuchtmeisje een duet heeft opgenomen. Wist je al.

Je column raakt me omdat ik je muzieksmaak hoog heb zitten. Omdat ik weet dat je een missionaris bent die iedere gelegenheid aangrijpt om anderen te overtuigen van de pracht van een plaat. Dat schept een band. Wanneer je schrijft dat zuchtmeisjesmuziek 'gezeiiiiik' is, dan bloedt mijn hart. Want als het om de Carla Bruni's, de Camille's en de Coralie Clements gaat, is geen emotie me te klein.

Ronald Giphart omschrijft in zijn meesterwerk Giph (1993) het zuchtmeisje Noelle als volgt:

'Noelle is mijn zuchtmeisje. Ze is bruusk, verveeld, verwend en tegelijkertijd (of misschien wel daarom) heel erg mooi en leuk (...) Als ik naar Noelle kijk, moet ik aan J.D. Salinger denken, aan Nescio, aan de dingen die ik mis, terwijl ik weet dat dat er niets valt te missen. Kijkend naar Noelle word ik een beetje wee, een beetje soft. Kijkend naar Noelle moet ik zachtjes zuchten om de wegzakkende zon achter de bergen, de dingen van het leven, de vergankelijkheid van alles om ons heen. Ik zou kunnen schrijven: kijkend naar Noelle wil ik voornamelijk met haar naar bed, en dat is natuurlijk ook zo, maar dat zou afdoen aan het feit dat ik meen wat ik daarvoor zei.'

Om maar even aan te geven dat het wat verder gaat dan wat Wikipedia erover zegt. De muzikale link werd rond de eeuwwisseling gelegd op het hartstochtelijke (oude) weblog van De Subjectivisten en is mede dankzij de door mij samengestelde compilaties Filles Fragiles #1 en #2 en mijn weblog een ingeburgerde term geworden. Zuchtmeisjes zuchten zachtjes als ze zingen. En daar moet ik dan weer zachtjes van zuchten. Ook zonder wegzakkende zon.

Denken aan Salinger, Nescio, de vergankelijkheid van alles om ons heen, sex: wat Noelle veroorzaakt, is minstens zo toepasbaar op Carla, Camille en Coralie. Zangeressen die, om je column nog eens aan te halen, soms de mist in gaan, er af en toe helemaal naast zitten of waar een steekje bij los zit (of ze het alfabet kunnen boeren weet ik niet). Zij zingen over literatuur, over (de vergankelijkheid van) het leven en over sex, ze zingen over zaken die hen beroeren. En dat beroert ons dan weer. Ons, ja. Jou en mij. En iedereen die dit leest, die kijkt naar de gelinkte clips, die naar de liedjes luistert. Zuchtmeisjes leggen hun ziel op tafel, hun emoties bloot, hun hele hebben en houden in onze oren. Je hoeft het niet te verstaan om het toch te voelen. En wie van muziek houdt, echt van muziek houdt, die voelt.

Wij zijn dus allen zuchtmeisjes. En dat houdt nooit op.

One of the best debut albums I've heard in ages, so sincere and accomplished she might never outshine this one.
Love the way her voice fits with folk, soul and reggae and her intonations making her songs deeply meaningful.

2 HOLDEN "Pedrolira" (2002)

Because Armelle's voice and Mocke's melodies are as inventive as Uwe Schmidt (Senor Coconut) production.
And because this one includes two of this decade's finest songs, "C'est plus pareil" and the instant classic "Une fraction de seconde".

3 CAMILLE "Le fil" (2005)

Absolutely stunning, breathtaking, mesmerezing.
And a real success here, where audacity isn't often on top of the charts.

4 KATERINE "Robots après tout" (2005)

A late deserved hit too, in a slightly different genre.
With hilarious lyrics and efficient dancing tunes, another kind of french pop.

5 KLUB DES LOOSERS "Vive la vie" (2004)

Probably the best hip hop record of the 00's, one of the most unusual at least.
Very dark mood but not depressing at all, well produced and written, still impressive years after.

6 DANIEL DARC "Crève coeur" (2004)

Former Taxi Girl frontman delivered an incredible redemption record and very emotional gigs too.

7 JULIEN BAER "Notre dame des limites" (2005)

An elegant and groovy hidden gem, his third record remains my favorite.

8 AUTOUR DE LUCIE "Faux mouvements" (2000)

"Je reviens" is definitely the entire career highlight while "Le salon" should have been a hit.
Sadly they didn't find the same inspiration after and leave some regrets.

9 MATHIEU BOOGAERTS "2000" (2002)

He might be one of the most underestimated songwriters ever as shows this flawless record.
Very few singers play with melancholy, tenderness and humour as subtly as him.

10 MICHEL HOUELLEBECQ "Présence humaine" (2000)

Houellebecq writing talent combining surprisingly Burgalat sound science.
An unexpected collaboration highly addictive.

1 Bertrand Burgalat - The SSSound of Music
This opened up the decade and perhaps the floodgates of French music to the unsuspecting American continent. He brought his love of soundtracks, 60's ye ye and ballades to a tentative North American audience and they responded with adoratian and devotion.

2 Marianne Dissard - L'entredeux
Everything this woman touches seems to be lovely. The album immediately won me over. The music she makes with Matt Mitchell is also charming, but in a more nostalgic mode.

3 Eglantine Gouzy - Boamaster
A gorgeous blend of avant and a deep dark vocal. A little new wave meets no wave with a good dose of Quaalude, which makes sense as I was introduced to Eglantine through one of those fabulous 4 Woman No Cry compilations put out by Monika records in Berlin.

4 MC Patate - Le Gateau Blaster
You can tell by the sly title that this record is as much poking fun at the rap world as it is swimming in it. This label (Le Vilain Chien) puts out so much crazy falling-apart-at-the-seams music, it is always fabulous and unexpected.

5 Yelle - Pop-up
Perfect summer music, where ever you may be. I never tire of it.

6/7 Colleen - Les Ondes Silencieuses/Les Boites a Musique
Colleen is a former Parisian high school teacher, by the name of Cecile Schott, who makes some of the most gorgeous and vibrant electronica of the decade. I offer two of her releases as better than any other music of the past decade:
Colleen et Les Boites a Musique uses music box samples to construct the gorgeous sounds.
On Les Ondes Silencieuses Colleen plays viola da gamba and classical guitar, both sampled and live.

8 Stereo Total - Do the Bambi
Much of the perfect Stereo Total music was made in the mid 90's but this slides in under the 2000's decade in being a fab return to their cheezy DIY roots. Fun, freaky and off-kilter noodling from my fave Franco-German couple.

9/10 Coralie Clement - Bye Bye Beauté/Toystore
I can't decide between Bye Bye Beaute or Toystore. They are both so interestingly of the times they were produced. I love the rock of Bye Bye and the old cafe sound of Toystore.

Honorary Mention V/A - So Young But So Cold Underground French Music 1977-1983
French new wave informed by a uniquely Gallic approach to cool synthesizers and sexy sirens. This was my beloved introduction to Ruth, Jacno, and Nini Raviolette. The compilation came out in 2004, way ahead of the of the contempo burning hot cold wave re-do that the kids are loving so much now.

Various Artists: Gentils Garçons ( Zyx)
Nachdem der umtriebige Holländer Guuz Hoogaerts bereits zwei hübsche Sampler mit Sängerinnen zusammengestellt hat („Filles Fragiles“ 1 und 2), gibt es nun die eigenwillige Compilation „Nette Jungs“ sozusagen mit alten Bekannten und neuen Namen, wobei auffällig viele Belgier und Nordfranzosen dabei sind. Das Spektrum der Mitwirkenden ist denkbar breit und reicht vom völlig unbekannten Belgier Samir Barris bis zum grossen Serge Gainsbourg und einem seiner Klassiker, der wunderbaren Latin-Nummer „Coleur Café“. Ein roter Faden, der die 15 Songs verbindet, ist nicht auszumachen. Eingerahmt von zwei Stücken über das Radfahren hat der Compiler einfach seinen Geschmack walten lassen und dass der holländische Connaiseur einen guten Geschmack hat, hat er bereits mit seinen Mädels-Compilatons bewiesen.
Insgesamt regiert auf der CD der Wohlklang. Besonders stark sind das hitverdächtige „Aie aie aie“ der belgischen Suarez und „Au grand jamais“ des jungen südfranzösichen Songwriters Bensé (den ich hier vor einem Jahr bereits abgefeiert hatte). Bensé ist der Verlobte der Sängerin Rose; den Titel hatte ich mir auch für LeTour 4 überlegt: ein wunderbare flockiger Folk-Pop-Ohrwurm.
Bei den Stücken der beiden Popstars Renan Luce und Benjamin Biolay wundert mich allenfalls die Songauswahl. Für meinen Geschmack sind auf den beiden Alben bessere Stücke als „Repenti“ und „Chambre d`amis“. Anyway. Ungewöhnlich ist dass hier auch ein Stück der britischen Tindersticks auftaucht, wobei das von Sänger Stuart Staples radebrechend französisch gesungene „Plus de liaisons“ (im Original: „No more affairs“) ein schöner Song ist.
Echte Entdeckungen sind der mir nicht bekannte Bretone Florian Mona und Sammy Decoster, dessen „L`homme que je ne suis pas“ mit countrytouch aufwartet. In Frankreich ein kleiner Hit ist Salsedos „Mon amour“ und auch das Duett von Arthur H mit der Kanadierin Feist, „La chanson de Satie“ ist bekannnt, wie ein anderes Duette von Dominique A mit Saule. Entdecken kann man auch den Belgier Liben („30 Decembre“ ist ein toller Titel). Ein feiner ruhiger Song ist „Encore des étoiles“ aus der Feder von Jay Alansky, gesungen von Barbara Carlotti und Pierre Faa. Letzterer wiederum spielt in der tollen Popband Peppermoon (siehe Extra-Kritik)
Fazit: Ein exzellenter Sampler Chapeau Mijnheer Hoogaerts!!

I was singing/whispering it to my mother a lot in the last months before she passed away (..it's all right...) so we decided to end her funeral with this song. While everybody was following the coffin at the end of the 2hr ceremony this song played and because it was an exceptional beautiful day in Belgium, everybody was walking into a very hot sun, clear skies.. a very, very beautiful moment how weird that might sound...
I wouldn't mind having a funeral ceremony like that ending on a positive note.

Ken writes about Find the River by REM:

It’s funny, but when the subject of funeral songs comes up in conversation, the first response you get is usually along the lines of “I’ve actually thought about this quite a bit.” – And since it’s your last chance to make a statement of sorts, it should be carefully chosen…and it’ll probably change from time to time.

For me, right now, I’d choose “Find the River” by rem, taken from their album Automatic for the People (the whole album deals with issues of life and death, its very good).

The song is a quiet and reflective, but it’s ultimately more hopeful than melancholy. It uses a flowing river as a metaphor for the passing of life. The image is one of a solitary soul floating down a river watching his life pass before his eyes, throwing aromatic fruit and spices as if he was sowing seeds. The river flows toward its inexorable but natural end at the ocean, just as life flows toward inevitable death.

"The river to the ocean goes, a fortune for the undertow. None of this is going my way. There is nothing left to throw of Ginger, lemon, indigo, coriander stem and rose of hay. Strength and courage overrides the privileged and weary eyes of river poet search naivete. Pick up here and chase the ride. The river empties to the tide. All of this is coming your way."

The repeated use of the phrase "nothing is going my way" is a reminder that the journey of life, especially at the end, is one that everyone takes alone.

A final brilliant aspect of "Find the River" is the way that it ends ... unexpectedly ... almost suddenly ... with all the loose ends left untied..,just like life...

Almie wants Bowie's Oh! You Pretty Things on her funeral:

I would want "Oh! You Pretty Things" by David Bowie to be played at my funeral because I think it's important to remind people how pretty I was. Sure, the song has a beautiful melody and inspired lyrics ("Homo sapiens have outgrown their use") but ultimately it's really rubbing it in that my friends and family have lost someone really, really ridiculously good looking.

Niagara - La fin des étoiles

And finally, the only French entry, La Fin des Etoiles by Niagara, requested by Anna Maria:

I want Niagara’s ”La Fin des Étoiles" played because it’s a very sombre and moving song. The lyrics are a bit vague but poetically speaks of being gone when the stars go out. It’s a reverie for the end of time itself in my interpretation. Muriel Morenos’s sense of drama really should make stones weep. I want weeping stones and grand gestures for my funeral song so that’s apt.
If I’m allowed one more song it can be Frank Sinatra’s “My way”, it has its origins in a French song and the words are suitable since it is a great song to exit on. It was played at my father’s funeral and really suited him. It does suit my goals to at least try to do things my way if possible, so it should fit me as well.

So there he is. Benjamin Biolay. Benjamin is behind the grand piano, his band is aside to him. Drums, keyboards / electronics, guitar, bass, and a separate microphone waiting. Four men and a girl, surrounded by cardboard figures of American basketball players.
We have no clue why these cardboard figures are there. And we don’t know who the musicians are, as we are supposed to. There can be no doubt about who we are here for. All of the stagelightning and setup is designed for one man only: Benjamin Biolay. His initials B.B.

B.B. might be the centre of the world, here in the Orangerie of the beautiful Botanique in Brussels, yet the first thing that comes to mind is that B.B. does not look too good –if not worrying bad. As with Gainsbourg, nicotine and alcohol come with the appearance of the singer.
Not that our man seems to be suffering from that. Watching Benjamin Biolay is an amazing experience. You notice how he is at ease with crowds – probably way bigger crowds than the 500 something that are packing the Orangerie tonight. If we were 5 thousand, it would not have make a difference to B.B., I’m getting the impression. He’s been around. He’s not impressed. He’s doing a job and makes sure to do it well. He’s singing, playing the guitar, playing the piano, playing the trumpet, walking around, clapping –being busy, being at work. He might even do titbits of smalltalk and jokes in between his wonderful songs of redemption and seduction.
His band is without the slightest misstake. With ease and experience, they play the music for Benjamin, in a more than two hours long set that jumps back and forth through the oeuvre of Biolay. Only the girl singer –the kind of appearance you could only hope for- seems to be struggling with her part. Yet at the same time, she perfectly lives up to the clumsiness that’s inherent of being a true zuchtmeisje.

The crowd, most french-spoken, aging from 18 to 68, loves it. This despite the fact that there’s no bar, no smoking and that arms and legs of strangers get in each others way, as there are too many people in Orangerie, filling the place up to it’s darkest corners.
No smoking? Not completely. One man is smoking. One cigarette after the other. One man on stage, in the spotlight, at the centre of everything that is happening tonight. Songs to sing and cigarettes to smoke might be the only true companions he has. The band is serving him. The audience is adoring him. Yet B.B. is alone, a singer on his own, with no place else but the stage to go. Benjamin Biolay. No matter what, il reste negatif.

La SCPP (Société Civile des Producteurs Phonographiques) est une société de gestion collective des droits des producteurs de phonogrammes et de vidéomusiques, tels que reconnus par les dispositions du Code de la Propriété Intellectuelle (CPI).

Avec plus de 700 membres, la SCPP représente plus de 80% du répertoire discographique géré sur le territoire français. Elle gère environ 1.500.000 phonogrammes et 20.000 vidéomusiques appartenant au répertoire national et international.

Notre société est mandatée par ses membres producteurs pour assurer la défense et le respect de leurs droits de propriété intellectuelle expressément énumérés à l’article L.213-1 du CPI, aux termes duquel
l’autorisation du producteur de phonogrammes est requise avant toute
reproduction, mise à la disposition ou communication au public de son
phonogramme.

Des décisions pénales de condamnation ont d’ores et déjà été obtenues par la SCPP à l’encontre de sites utilisant des phonogrammes sans autorisation sur Internet, notamment sous forme de liens permettant d’accéder à des fichiers MP3.

Or, nos services ont pu constater sur votre site web dont le fournisseur d’hébergement est la société Blogspot (adresse URL: http://fillessourires.blogspot.com/), la présence de dizaines de fichiers sons proposés au public en téléchargement, dont des titres du nouvel album de l’artiste Elodie Frégé, qui ne sont pas encore commercialisés.

Vous n’avez sollicité ni obtenu aucune autorisation de reproduction, de mise à disposition ou de communication au public de ces phonogrammes auprès de leurs producteurs légitimes.

Nous vous mettons en demeure de bien vouloir cesser immédiatement cette activité, et de supprimer en conséquence de votre site sur Internet, l’accès à ces fichiers illicites, et d’utiliser votre site à des fins strictement légales.

Nous vous engageons pour l’avenir, à obtenir les autorisations nécessaires auprès du producteur de phonogrammes concerné, avant de procéder à l’utilisation de leurs enregistrements sur le réseau Internet.

Nous vous rappelons en effet, qu’aux termes de la loi française, les modes d’exploitation ci-dessus mentionnés sont passibles, s’ils sont réalisés sans l’autorisation du producteur de phonogrammes, de trois ans d’emprisonnement et de trois cent mille euros d’amende.

Par ailleurs et outre ces sanctions pénales, vous pouvez faire l’objet de demandes en dommages et intérêts de la part des producteurs de phonogrammes dont les droits ont ainsi été violés.
